A Buckhead designer offers tips for preparing guest rooms for overnight visitors.

For designer Liz Williams of Liz Williams Interiors, the best guest spaces don’t look like posh hotels. They feel lived-in and personal. “I think a collected guest room feels most welcoming, whether it’s family antiques, collected art or a beautiful rug,” she says. Still, making guests feel like family comes down to the details and takes a little planning. Here, Williams shares how she gets her guest room ready for the season, from layered linens to thoughtful bedside touches.
How is holiday guest room prep different from everyday guest room prep?
I try not to go overboard with holiday decor in my guest room, but a seasonal bouquet or simple greenery feels festive. I make sure to add an extra throw. I love a layered look for a bed, and it’s nice for colder weather.
The holiday season can be stressful, even for the most prepared host. How do you set yourself up for success?
I start early! I make sure the bed is freshly made and fluffed, the bathroom is stocked with plenty of towels, and space in the closet is cleared days ahead of time. The room is ready, and I can worry about other items on my list.
What are some thoughtful ways hosts can make a guest feel comfortable this season?
I make sure the bathroom is stocked with extra toiletries in case someone forgets a toothbrush, etc. Having a spot on the bedside table for a carafe of water and a pretty glass is a nice touch. I like to make the room a place for a guest to retreat, especially in this busy time of year. A comfortable reading chair or a desk area is nice for downtime.
What are three things every guest room should have?
Beautiful and comfortable linens, accessible chargers and a good place for luggage and hanging clothes.
What’s one way a host can go above and beyond in a guest room?
I like a comfy bed, so in addition to crisp linens, I like to add a mattress topper to make it extra plush.
